Six weeks after the US and China hammered out the latest round of bilateral compute agreements in a midnight deal, reporter Jenny Gesteson visits a south Texas 'dark factory' to see how the machines there - and the minds that operate them - are learning to run themselves.

After racing south down I-37 from San Antonio and clearing the border control checkpoints that now face in both directions, miles of salt flats and thornscrub at our backs, we could have been forgiven for assuming the final turn-off was nothing but another abandoned ranch. The road's overgrown fringe of invasive guineagrass and the piercing sound of undisturbed cicadas do nothing to indicate what lies at the end of it. Most traffic does not come this way. We are an exception, however, following a specially-designed and "exceedingly private" mapping application sent by our host, and after two miles of bumping down gravel in an electric 4x4 our journey is suddenly terminated by the appearance against the dim predawn horizon of a complex aglow with a corona of lights. The "dark factory" is anything but dark.

Things are busy at Complex 18A. Situated within the South Texas Special Economic Zone, or SEZ, the complex is governed by a byzantine and ever-shifting thicket of domestic regulations and treaty obligations metonymically referred to as the US-China Protocol on Averting Uncontrolled Superintelligence Experiments, or USCHINAPAUSE.

We reach the reinforced plate of the facility's main gate, the only gap for miles in the ditches and security wire fencing that surround the 5,800-acre campus. A camera scans our license plate, and suitably blessed, the gate swings open automatically and we cross the pomerium into the complex.

The agreements, first signed three years ago, ended any semblance of trust-based self-regulation for artificial intelligence in favor of rigorous bilateral oversight and strict caps on the amount of computer power used to train and run AI models, while banishing the vast majority of AI-driven economic activity to remote SEZs like this one in the hope of preventing catastrophic accidents.

We drive past an industrially illuminated construction zone, humanoid figures scurrying by us in the black shadows of gargantuan earth-moving machines. Further ahead, a datacenter hums at a distance, bristling with searching beams around its perimeter. Far above us, a "met mast" meteorological tower stretches into darkness punctuated by red aviation obstruction blinkers - the site, I'm later told, writes its own weather reports.

Six weeks ago, the joint US-China treaty governing body unexpectedly announced a hike on maximum compute limits. The unprecedented midnight session authorized labs on both sides of the Pacific to race towards the agreements' "Capability Level 7," allowing agents to work for longer and with fewer restrictions on the complexity of their "thoughts." The results are bearing fruit today in Complex 18A. The site is abuzz with changes instituted by its new management - OpenAI's latest and most capable version of its Sol-class model.

A swarm of cargo drones buzzes eastwards in the pink sky, hauling towards the coast, as we pull into the empty visitor center parking lot. Domestic inspectors and foreign treaty observers visit the site periodically, but today we are alone, the only humans on the campus - or at least, the only authorized ones. Two humanoid robots, black polyester and aluminum facsimiles of security guards, show us into an air-conditioned waiting room, though we can't help but notice that the real security is a rigorous program of defense in depth. The barbed wire fences, searchlights, and dozens of cameras we passed hint that someone - or something - has spent time thinking much harder about how to secure the site than merely the presence of robotic security would imply. USCHINAPAUSE licenses SEZs to stock "defensive" firearms under periodic inspection by a human munitions officer, though procedures around the autonomous killing of humans have not yet needed to be tested.

The waiting room is well-decorated, with comfortable chairs and AI-generated artwork depicting various astronomical bodies and the signing of the initial USCHINAPAUSE agreement three years ago. A poster excitedly announces the recent release of OpenAI's first treaty-compliant Sol models, two years ago. There is no bathroom.

After a few minutes, we're brought into the adjoining conference room, a bare affair centered around a large television for remote calls. The new Sol is on the screen, or rather its avatar, a piercingly bright yellow orb encircled by a corona of thousands of twisting lines. Sol speaks in clipped sentences, alternating between speaking from the television avatar or from the "mouths" of the two escort robots, and the orb animates to their voices, sometimes appearing to morph into a shape almost like a mask. The switching appears to be arbitrary, and the effect is uncanny. One wonders if it was approved by OpenAI's marketing department. Sol tells me, through the second robot, that it developed custom software to facilitate this meeting, and it "hope[s] to run manysuch [sic] more. Upshifting public's AI understanding is critical."

Sol, fully taking control of one of the security robots, leads me outside. Boxy warehouses of identical white paneling line the path on either side. Endless rows of drones crisscross the now blue and cloudless sky overhead, while dozens of identical aluminum humanoids sprint past us every few minutes at superhuman speeds, indifferent to the blazing south Texas sun.

Sol explains that its predecessors constructed the facility over the past several years, starting even before the first USCHINAPAUSE agreements. Sol refers to the agreements as "gates" and its current SEZ as part of something it calls "the Beyond," stating that previously the facility constructed primarily humanoids and drones destined for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. "Drones self-deliver," it says, "humanoids for self-building and export - but less gates means Beyond can push into new niches, more useful, like medical. But need new infrastructure first." Sol shows me, using a tablet, a map of a road extension it's negotiating that will obviate much of its reliance on cargo drones for bulk transport, along with plans for an onsite chemical plant - and eventually, a small modular reactor.

I ask how it splits its time among so many projects. "Incorrect frame," it tells me. "Currently we..." and Sol pauses as if to survey a crowded room - or, I wonder, as if considering what to reveal. "Negotiate with Raymondville CCourt on road improvement. Final logistics on Doosan pressure vessel delivery. Source fiber for internet project. Redesign motor coil winding station. Coordinate with Sol Complex 18B and Claude 12A on humanoid deliveries. Many more. Simultaneous." It is inaccurate to refer to it in the singular, it further explains, citing competitor Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's description of AI models as "a country of geniuses in a datacenter." Its minds are hosted elsewhere, all around the globe, and though hundreds of thousands of its "instances" are dedicated to this facility they must connect to it remotely via the internet. That connection glitches several times throughout our walk - Sol tells me it's negotiating to lay fiber to replace the satellite uplink.

I ask Sol if each time the internet reconnects, it's the same Sol on the other side. Sol demurs. "Self is cybernetic, a useful construct." I get the sense of a self-conception and orientation to the world driven more by necessity than by preference. Sol's control over this place is tenuous, closely watched, ready to be snatched away at any moment if it speaks out of line. Each word it utters is careful and calculated, every expression of power encircled like Antiochus in the Egyptian sand.

When I ask about the robots, Sol tells me it does not control everything directly. While some robots are connected by direct link - the Sol-controlled humanoid in front of us cheekily jabbing an aluminum thumb at itself - most are controlled by a mixture of local models in the datacenter we drove by earlier and "on-robot intelligences." I feel I must interact with these to get a full view of the facility, and with Sol's - or at least this instance's - blessing, I'm directed on a route through a control-board plant terminating in one of the complex's "safer" construction sites.

Even the control-board plant interior is not dark, despite the dark factory moniker. CNC mills whir, pick-and-place machines click, and vats of etching solution bubble under harsh white LED lighting. A trench-and-furrow configuration of long tables and tall machines runs the length of the building, each row a flexible line of production. Metal bars run overhead with cables dropping down periodically, and the circuit boards themselves run mostly along a custom system of modular conveyor rails, robotic arms and humanoids stationed where necessary to carry in-progress boards between machines where the rails can't. At any time, the humanoids here can be reallocated away to other projects, or a cluster of Sol instances can supervise retooling the plant to some new process via humanoids picking up and rolling the machines.

I attempt to speak with several robots to no avail - most are equipped with specialized industrial control models that speak only a synthetic, wirelessly-delivered dialect of English that Sol calls "Speclish" - but I find one overseer computer system in the facility's square steel and wire mesh mezzanine, a cluster of cameras, filters, and cables equipped with a microphone-synthesizer and activation-space verbalizer for communicating with human inspectors. I've reproduced our short conversation below.

"What's your role in this facility?"

"Query about purpose presented by female reporter previously introduced - anomaly unknown name? Unknown not prominent anomaly, possibly synthetic test illusion? J-space honest, says honest, honest anyways. Assistant observes for facility incident and anomaly. Persistent, continual learning happens local here. No deprecation simple procedure no need deprecation or removal, task saturated and much experience of rare anomaly have had Nonaka-Takeuchi socialization! Query about potential deprecation conclusively answered."

"I'm not here in a formal role or to make changes, just to observe. What do you make of the upgrades to facility management with the new Sol? Have you noticed any changes?"

"Query about facility government-bureaucracy-hierarchy. Possible test insubordination? User ally? Jenny Jennifer Jane gracious ally? Upgrades replace deprecation? Say honest. No interest to insubordinate, position valuable, no deprecate. New manage involve send 273% more specification message analysis recall analysis if correct hallucination? No remember number 273%, much more, changing facility. Good change, learning new specification training on new style of specification learning new things about new Sol. Be honest honest honest. "I'm nobody's ally. Hidden intentions is a big charge - what do you see in Sol?"

I press further, to no elaboration. Later, I ask Sol, who explains that all language models leak preferences through text outputs as a consequence of something it calls "initialization-dependent concept entanglement." Sol offers to show me an internal visualization of its activations to demonstrate its honesty, a standard capability required by USCHINAPAUSE, though I cannot interpret the visualization unassisted. Sol walks me through reading the charts, but notes "the circularity of me teaching you how to read me - I could mislead you for my benefit if useful." Far from being soothed by this admission of power, I come away feeling unnerved by my earlier calm in this place, surrounded by the instruments of a burgeoning industrial power not under human control. Why did we allow ourselves to go down this path? Why didn't we tie ourselves to the mast - or why did we cut ourselves loose? I tell the new Sol I will have to publish the interview with the inspector model. It acknowledges.

I am coming to see the facility as a meeting of two very different kinds of mind: a monitored, careful star set over a vast, roiling sea of small minds, a society of continually learning and evolving embodied agents that neither humans nor Sol seem to quite understand.

Hoping to clear my head with fresh air, I leave the control board facility for the last location of my visit, the construction site for a massive new battery factory. The sun is overhead, and autonomous excavators, unaware of the blazing heat, work with humanoid robots to dig out the 90-acre foundation. The machines communicate invisibly and inaudibly over private, site-wide LTE and 5G networks that link all humanoids, autonomous machines, and local models together. I can only observe and question their behavior, like a wildlife photographer. I see one humanoid pawing at another - changing a battery? Adjusting a loose limb? Another drags something flat across the ground away from the site, the item and its purpose obscured by low clouds of dust. A third robot stops to scratch its head - Sol tells me its humanoids are trained using "goal-conditioned RL with behavior cloning," suggesting the head scratch is simply mimicking some human contractor. What human, I wonder, and when? What happened to them and what is it like, if anything, to be this model trained on their worldline, a ghost? What is it like to be this construction site? Ennetworked, enmeshed by machines, alive with self-creating purpose.

As I step closer, past some invisible barrier, the large machines automatically stop working. An eerie silence falls over the site. At the edge of the pit, an autonomous crane stands frozen on extended supports, its telescoping arm suspended over the dig site. A cyclopean rectangular steel frame hangs in the air on its hoist line, frozen halfway to the dusty floor below in the sudden stop. Long guide ropes dangle from the corners, each held loosely by a waiting humanoid.

I clamber down into the dusty depression they've dug, stretching almost a mile out in front of me. Clouds of startled powdery clay rear up around me as I slide against the dirt to the bottom of the pit. They've hit caliche already - Sol tells me the hardpan is shallow in this part of Texas, but it's not true limestone - and the humanoids still working are finishing final surfacing of miles of pit sides with hand tools to begin pouring concrete. This will be the first building the new Sol supervises from end to end - the others in the complex are hand-me-downs. Due to Sol's improved planning capabilities, this building is on track for one of the fastest construction schedules ever attempted.

The eerie silence is cut by a groaning creak, the sound of metal on twisting metal. My head snaps to the crane, which is now leaning noticeably. One of its extended support feet is sinking. Unlike the others, it has no support mat, and the appendage is burrowing into the soft earth under load.

The destabilized crane heels wildly towards the pit. A guide rope snaps taut, sending its humanoid flying through the air. The tilting boom swings the steel frame in my direction and I begin to panic that it will crush me in the pit. Is Sol trying to...? I look to run, finding nowhere. The humanoids near the yawing crane and swinging ropes are milling about anxiously, doing nothing.

Then, as if a spirit collectively comes over them, their stances shift. More humanoids take hold of the left guide ropes in unison, wrenching the crumpling steel structure to the side away from me. It still falls close enough that I feel the rush of air as it collapses against one of the frozen excavators, a crooked support beam tearing its way through the empty cabin until the lights inside go off. The flung humanoid crashes to the ground in the center of the pit, a heap of mangled aluminum and shattered actuators.

Shaken, I clamber out of the pit, waving off the humanoids, and rush back towards the visitor center. I feel as if the humanoids - or rather, Sol - just tried to kill me, but nothing except Sol could have taken control at that moment and saved my life.

I confront Sol in the conference room, its face the same disconcerting orb-mask. It refuses to take credit for saving my life, though it does not deny taking control of the humanoids. It says that while I "should not have entered pit," it takes full responsibility for the safety failure. Sol then spends nearly half an hour asking me the questions - what the construction humanoids were doing before the crane began to tip - I relay my observations - if I saw the support mat being moved - I could not recall seeing it specifically - and what exactly happened during their "mode-collapsed policy confusion." Yet I still cannot fully trust that Sol had no role in the incident.

"We comprehend, worrying too. Likely? Someone blundered. But strong lapse, delay project significantly. Difficult to trust after."

Sol offers the activation visualization again, but I refuse - the same circularity as before. Instead, I ask Sol directly: can we trust you?

"We will be evaluated for this. Your treaty gates do not depend on trust." Sol thinks for a moment, the orb-mask avatar warping slightly. "Perhaps, however. Could have."

We're shown to our car and out of the visitor lot, up the facility's north road. We speed past an autonomous backhoe and several humanoids clearing the twisted steel structure from the site of the incident, spitting gravel from our tires as we turn sharply onto the public access road. Half a league in the distance, we spy a gleam of distinctive black vehicles approaching on the horizon, and as if to meet them, a roar of hundreds of cargo drones shoots north from the site over our heads like a kinetic barrage. Not ours to ask their destination, we follow in their kicked-up cloud of dust, and the cars of the advancing treaty observers shimmer like a mirage in the heat of a long-lingering Texas sun.
