A family tree from Markov (1913) to 2026, inspired by the linguistic evolution chart in Stanisław Lem's Golem XIV. Made working with Claude Opus 5.5.

The thesis is that AI grew out of language modeling, not out of attempts to build AI directly. A tradition rooted in Markov, Shannon, and distributional statistics sweeps up into modern transformers.
